  • New movies set the holiday eve record    Chinese moviegoers set a box office(票房) record for the eve of the week-long National Day holiday. By 9:30 p.m. September 30, new movies had brought in 630 million yuan.
The major movies contributing to the box office record were My People, My Country, The Captain and The Climbers.
My People, My Country ranked first by bringing in around 270 million yuan. It was made up of seven short stories which were set in historic moments to look back at New China's 70 years of existence. The movie was co-directed by Chen Kaige,Zhang Yibai,Guan Hu,Xue Xiaolu,Xu Zheng,Ning Hao and Wen Muye.
Another well-received film, The Captain, earned 194 million yuan, occupying the second place. Starring actor Zhang Hanyu, the film is based on heroic Sichuan Airlines pilot Liu Chuanjian, who completed one of the most miraculous(奇迹的) emergency landings in China's civil aviation (民航) history.
Also adapted from real events,The Climbers earned 157 million yuan. With an excellent cast including Zhang Ziyi and Wu Jing, the film is about Chinese mountaineers' climbing to the top of Mount Qomolangma.
Wu Jing said the film filled a gap in the market, with sports-themed titles quite rare in the world's second-largest movie market.
Besides the three movies, eight other films will be on during the holiday ending on Oct. 7.

  • The sun is going to expand into the orbit of Mercury(水星)according to scientific calculations,which will result in the entire Earth catching fire, destroying all lives. In order to survive, the United Earth Government prepares 10,000 giant engines on Earth to drive it away from its original orbit. The whole trip is expected to last 2,500 years.
This imaginative tale is at the heart of the science fiction movie The Wandering Earth. The original novel was written by Liu Cixin, one of China's most outstanding science fiction writers and a prize winner of the Hugo Award in 2015 for his novel The Three-Body Problem.
Perhaps thanks to Liu's fame,as well as the huge marketing efforts of the movie team,The Wandering Earth posted ticket sales of 670 million yuan when it was shown on the first day. More importantly,The Wandering Earth is the first "made-in-China" science fiction movie on the big screen,as the director,Guo Fan, is also Chinese.
As a fan of Liu, having read almost all of his science fiction books,I should mention the movie follows a rather different form from his novel. Actually,it only borrows from the novel the idea of the Earth having to escape from the solar system. That's just the point. It means Chinese movie production teams have grown enough to develop new ideas on the creative basis of science fiction writers, and the writers are willing to work together with them, thus making the film get the best possible performance.
Liu may be a highly regarded science fiction writer in China, but he is not the only one. There are many writers with rich imaginations, and their works can be adapted into movies, too. Someone has predicted that 2019 will mark the starting year of success for Chinese science fiction movies. Only time will tell whether that prediction will come true. But if more professional movie teams and creative writers could work together, we can certainly expect more success for the domestic(国内的)science fiction movie industry.

(1)Why does the Earth have to escape from its original orbit in the story?

A.Because the sun is about to hit the Earth.
B.Because its original orbit will be occupied by Mercury.
C.Because the giant engines' strong power will drive it away.
D.Because it has to avoid being destroyed by the coming disaster.
(2)What can we learn about the movie from the passage?

A.It is adapted from a science fiction novel.
B.Its author was once awarded for The Wandering Earth.
C.It achieved huge success mainly because of its author's fame.
D.Its director Guo Fan is also a famous science fiction writer in China.
(3)What does the underlined word "It" in the fourth paragraph refer to?

A.The unexpected success of the movie.
B.The great success of the original novel.
C.The creative adaptation from the novel.
D.The imaginative idea from the novel.
(4)What does the author think of the future of Chinese science fiction movies?

A.There is a long way to go.
    B.They will definitely succeed.
    C.They have great potential.
    D.It cannot be predicted.

  • How do young people learn best? This is something I think about a lot when teaching foreign languages to young people. I often find that traditional teaching methods are neither always effective nor interesting for young brains to learn a foreign language.
After moving to southern Italy I was lucky to have the chance to run a private course teaching English to under 7-year-olds. I was aware that children liked to sing and enjoyed games so I wanted to use these tools to help my students develop English conversation skills. I found some fun and easy songs online, which they loved. I also found the English versions of some nursery rhymes they recognized. All of them were very interesting and helpful but students could still not have a basic conversation in English.
I knew I wanted these guys to be fully immersed in the language I was teaching and I also wanted them to speak it. I was keen to give 90% of my lessons in English but I knew it'd be difficult to get them to speak in a foreign language they had little or zero exposure to outside our lessons, so I had to come up with a simple yet effective plan.
One day I decided to prepare a simple dialogue in English, so that I could get hem to sing and chant(有节奏地反复的唱) it, rather than simply getting students to repeat the phrases. I discovered that chanting some conversational sentences was the way to get students to speak in English- it worked!
So when teaching English to young now, I encourage them to make up their own songs and chants to help them remember expressions or complex sentences.

(1)What is the passage mainly talking about?

    A. How to make young learners like a foreign language.
    B. How to teach foreign languages to young people.
    C. How to run a private course in southern Italy.
    D. How to help the younger children with studies.
(2)What does the underlined word "immersed" mean in the 3rd paragraph?

    A. Amused.
    B. Buried.
    C. Related.
    D. Informed.
(3)How did the author feel when faced with difficulty in teaching?

    A. He found it impossible to teach children with little English.
    B. He tried to be a patient and responsible teacher.
    C. He realized he was unable to finish the task of teaching.
    D. He actually felt kind of discouraged and disappointed.
(4)What can be inferred from the passage?

    A. Mistakes are an important part of education.
    B. A teacher can never tell where his influence stops.
    C. A teacher should understand his students' needs.

  • A study suggested a trip to the theater, museum or art gallery could help you live longer, and the more often, the better. Researchers from University College London(UCL) found that people who engaged in the arts more frequently had a 31% lower risk of dying early when compared to those who didn't. Even going to the theater or museum once or twice a year was linked with a 14% lower risk.
"While exercises are undoubtedly thought to be good for health, these leisure are pleasure activities are often considered to have nothing to do with good health," said Fancourt, an associate professor of UCL.
How often an individual engaged in the arts,including exhibitions,concerts and operas but not the cinema, was measured at the start of the study. The study analyzed a range of economic,health and social factories to try to explain why there was a link between taking part in leisure activities and living longer. Part of the reason came down to social and economic differences among those people. Wealth,they found,explained about 9% of the association. Cognitive(认知的) differences, social engagement and mental health also played a role.
"Engagement in the arts can reduce stress and build creativity that allows people to adapt to changing circumstances. It also helps people build social capital- accessing emotional support. A greater sense of purpose could also play a role. If more evidence can be found,we are getting an increasingly rich picture of how engagement in the arts can benefit health. IT can have wide-ranging benefits and help healthier people live longer." said Fancourt.
World Health Organization's review of available evidence also showed that both passive participation, like visiting a museum, and active participation, like singing in a choir, and health benefits.

    (1)What did the study suggest?

    A. Engagement in the arts could help people live longer.
    B. Exercises have nothing to do with good health.
    C. Engagement in the arts could help people create wealth.
    D. Exercises could help people build social capital.

    A. Going o the theater.
    B. Attending a concert.
    C. Visiting the museum.
    D. Watching a movie.
(3)What can we infer from the text?

    A. Engagement in the arts depends on whether we have free time.
    B. Social and economic differences affect our engagement in the arts greatly.
    C. Participating in the arts can bring us many health benefits.

  • Amazing Movies    Are you looking for some movies? You've landed on the right place. Let's take a look at the list I've collected.
    A Beautiful Mind
A Beautiful Mind is the story of John Nash, a mathematician who went on to win the Nobel Prize for his Game Theory. This movie brings his whole journey on screen-from his beginning to his downhill ride.
The first half is all about his rise to fame while the second half shows how he slowly falls into madness. After many years of fighting, he finally is victorious.
    I.Q.
The story is about an auto mechanic who falls for Albert Einstein's niece. The only problem is that she is engaged(已订婚的) to someone else. Fortunately,Einstein likes him. The young man pretends to be a physicist to run after her, but things don't go as he has planned.
if A Beautiful Mind was a little too heavy for you, I.Q. would be the perfect fit. It's a light drama that is funny and heartwarming for the most part.
    Good Will Hunting
Good Will Hunting is a touching tale of a troubled young man called Will Hunting who is gifted with a natural talent in mathematics.
However, he is struggling to find his identity. He can solve any math problem, but not the one he seems to be struggling with in his life. His life seems to be getting only worse until one day he meets Sean, a therapist, who helps him find direction in life.
    Creation
Creation is a story of a famous scientist, Charles Darwin, best known for his theory of evolution. This movie attempts to bring his struggling days into focus, the time when he was dealing with the loss of his daughter and was suffering from hallucinations(幻觉). At the same time, he was working on a book called ON the Origins of Species, which he finally completed.
All in all, Creation is a great historical drama.
(1)If you are interested in a relaxing movie, you can go and see

  • Late US artist Andy Warhol is believed to have once said, "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes."
But in this age of social media, selfies(自拍),and the Internet,it's hard to say what "fame" actually is.
In the movie Vox Lux (《光之声》),which was first shown this month at the Venice Film Festival, US director Brady Corbet tried to answer that question.
"Fame is a commodification of everything, where violence becomes something you sell, news becomes something you sell, and even private life does," the movie's star Natalie Portman told reporters at the Toronto International Film Festival.
In the movie,the Israeli-US actress plays the leading role of Celeste,a pop singer who's 14 years into a hugely successful career. By that point,however,the character has become bitter(愤愤不平的)and her fame is beginning to fade-compared to her younger self, a sweet and carefree girl who suddenly finds herself in the spotlight.
This is a classic (经典的) tale of a rise to fame, but in today's world of social media,it's easy for just about anyone with a smartphone to become famous. But as more and more people search for the spotlight,this may add pressure on many of us to keep up with the "perfect" lives we see on the Internet.
"It appears that most people are living lives full of nothing but happiness, love, and rewarding events and experiences," psychologist (心理学家) Kurt Smith wrote on HuffPost.
That isn't to say that everyone uses their popularity to make others feel bad about themselves. Take UK beauty blogger Em Ford for example. In 2017,the online star,known for her makeup tutorials(教程),posted a video in which she slowly removed her flawless makeup,showing her bad skin underneath(在下面). "I wanted to create a film that showed how social media can set unrealistic expectations for both women and men," Ford wrote in the video's description.
So, it seems that the definition of fame changes all the time. But if Vox Lux teaches us one lesson,it's that if we're lucky enough to obtain the "commodity" of fame, we should spend it wisely.

(1)What is fame in Natalie Portman's eyes?

A.It is something one should try to avoid.
B.It is becoming famous in a short time.
C.It changes everything in our life into a commodity.
D.It is the popularity created by social media, selfies and the Internet.
(2)What is the movie Vox Lux mainly about, according to the article?

A.It's about how fame puts pressure on all of us.
B.It's about how we should deal with fame well.
C.It's about the life of a troubled pop singer.
D.It's about why most people take to fame.
(3)The author uses Em Ford's example mainly to

    .
A.stress the importance of showing the truth to the public
B.prove that some people use their fame to guide others
C.explain how social media sets unrealistic expectations for people
D.show that the definition of fame changes all the time
(4)What is the author's attitude toward fame?

    A.Worried.
    B.Objective.
    C.Unclear.
    D.Approving.

  • Have you ever imagined what it would be like to see the world through an animal's eyes? For example, what does a chimpanzee see as it sits at the top of a tree, or what is a penguin's view as it dives into the sea to catch its dinner?
These questions were answered in the nature documentary Animals with Cameras, produced by the BBC. The three-part miniseries (迷你剧) was first aired in the UK last month. To explore animal stories "told" by the animals themselves, the documentary's filmmakers worked with scientists to develop cameras that wild animals could wear.
"Never before have we seen such high-quality footage (连续镜头) directly from the animal's point of view," BBC Nature executive producer Fred Kaufman told PBS. "This miniseries greatly expands our comprehension of animal behavior and this camera technology opens up new possibilities for discovering so much more."
Indeed, the groundbreaking technology provided a new perspective of the animal kingdom. New cameras with enough battery life to shoot for hours at a time were designed to be comfortable enough for animals to wear, according to the documentary's designer Chris Watts.
The technical challenges didn't stop there. Some animals were very curious about the equipment, with some even fighting each other for the chance to wear a camera. In the case of chimpanzees, "We had to create dummy (伪造的) cameras, so that every chimpanzee could get one," the miniseries' wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan told Live Science.
For animals that were comfortable enough to be with human beings, the cameras could be fitted and removed by hand. But for others, the cameras came off automatically using a timed release and were collected afterward. This meant that the cameras needed to be as tough as possible.
To avoid disturbing the animals, scientists who were good at dealing with wildlife came to help by putting the cameras on the animals. "The last thing we want to do is cause them distress," the documentary's producer Dan Rees told the BBC. "To follow an animal in the first place, there had to be a clear benefit in terms of knowledge about it that might be useful to protect a species in the future."
Their efforts certainly paid off."Footage that captures these rare and exciting glimpses of animals' hidden habits is important to scientists,but documentaries like Animals with Cameras also resonate(引起共鸣)with audiences,enabling them to realize the beauty of wildlife and the peril(危险) they're facing in their natural environments," a life scientist noted.

  • American actor James Dean has been dead for 64 years. James Dean,who died at the age of 25 in September 1955,had starred in just three movies before he died in a car accident. They are Rebel Without a Cause,East of Eden and Giant. Yet, he will star in a new movie about the Vietnam War thanks to digital technology,which generates(产生) images of James Dean by computer.
The idea that one of the movie's most beloved former stars would be recreated digitally for a new film has been met with criticism(批评). Captain America actor Chris Evans called the plan to use Dean's image in the film disrespectful.
However,Mark Roesler,the chairman of CMG said,"Dean has more than 183,000 followers on Instagram,and he is still important today. He was known as Hollywood's 'rebel(叛逆者)' who famously said 'If a man can bridge the gap(沟壑) between life and death, and if he can live after he's dead, then maybe he is a great man.'" Roesler added, "What was considered rebellious in the 1950s is very different from what is rebellious today, and we feel confident that he would support this modern-day act of rebellion."
Anton Ernst, the film's director, said, "I respect Dean's life and history. The movie is one of hope and love. There are still a lot of James Dean's fans worldwide and there would always be critics. All we can do is to tell a great story." Ernst added, "Dean's family views this as his fourth movie. We do not want to let his fans down."

  • On my first round-the-world trip, I planned everything out in advance. I knew where I was going, how long I was staying there, and how I would get there. But halfway through I ditched the plan and went with the flow. Over the years how I plan my travel has changed. Now, I am a last-minute planner and seldom travel with any plan.
Traveling without a plan gives you great flexibility(灵活性). Since nothing is booked far in advance, you can turn to something better comes along. I changed my plans to meet a friend on an island in Thailand and stayed for a month. I wouldn't have had that experience if I had kept to my planned schedule.
However, most new travelers are the opposites- they over plan their trips. Their whole journey is scheduled. Two days here; there days there. I understand why people do that. When time is short, they want to see as much as possible. They don't want to waste a single second.
Actually,it is better to slow down your pace. Spending more time in one place allows you to feel rhythm of life better. You can travel at a more relaxed pace,see more than just the attractions,and open up your schedule to the happy accidents of travel.
When I first made my travel plan,I tried to include everything in it. Then I realized it was unrealistic,and revised my plan. I made a list of one or two things I wanted to see each day and spaced everything out. It's an important lesson to learn. I think the best trip plan is to work out the general path you want to take, book the first few nights of your trip, and let your travels unfold from there. This way you are never locked into a certain place if your feelings change.
