  • On my first day of high school,I asked an eleventh grader where my class was.And he told me it was "on the fourth floor,next to the pool." I found out five minutes later that we don't even have a fourth floor and there's no pool either! Besides that,I didn't have any trouble with the older kid.
I think the biggest difference between middle and high school is the homework load(工作量) and size of the school.I went from maybe fifteen minutes of homework a night to several hours,so I had to learn how to make full use of time! Our class size is around 550,but joining in clubs,sports,music,and other activities at campus makes it easier to get to know people in every grade.
The best advice I can give about the years you spend in high school is to learn things for yourself,not just to get a good grade.There have been so many tests that I've prepared for the night before,gotten an A,and not remembered anything later.I've changed that this year,and I enjoy school so much more.Don't take easy lectures just to have a simple year.If you have a choice between chemistry and sports,the first will prove to be a lot more useful!
While drinking and smoking might be present in some middle schools,they're also around in high school.I have a lot of friends who promised they'd never drink or smoke,but are now partying every weekend. If you have "fun" and spend your nights wasting instead of studying,you will regret it when you're applying for(申请)college.The "friends" who say you're a loser for not partying are really not your friends at all.It's hard to see your closest friends grow apart and go in different directions,but don't follow their footsteps.Create your own path in life and make your own decisions.

(1)What does the author think of high school?

    A.There are very few activities.
B.It's hard to meet new people there.
    C.It requires hard work.
D.There isn't enough time for homework.
(2)What does the author advise high school students to do?

A.Get ready for tests the night before.
    B.Give up sports.
    C.Choose useful classes.
D.Try their best to get good grades.
(3)Who may write the text most probably?

    A.A high school student.
    B.A chemistry teacher.
    C.A college student.
    D.A sports player.
(4)The last paragraph mainly tells us

A.about the trouble caused by drinking and smoking
B.not to go to any party in high school
C.not to lose ourselves in high school
D.about the importance of making friends

  • If your child has mobile Internet access,it will be more difficult to monitor(监督)and control his or her Internet use.Kids are turning to the Internet for everything from hanging out with friends to shopping,which makes it harder for parents to keep track of their online activities.Fortunately,there are many choices for controlling what your kids see on their computers,laptops,and mobile devices.
Content blockers and filters are great tools to use for younger kids.They allow you more control over where they go and what they do online.A content blocker can block some unhealthy websites or limit a child's search to the kind of sites.A content filter can scan sites and pictures and block those sites that contain certain words,key phrases,or contents.
Consider tracking software for older teenagers.This software enables you to see which sites your children have visited,tracking their path online.This tool gives young people more freedom to explore the Internet,but it also allows you to check that they are using the Internet responsibly.Let your teenagers know that you trust them,but that you will be regularly checking that they are visiting appropriate sites online.
Even if you use content blockers,filters,and trackers,you know that a lot of kids figure out ways to get around these,so it's important to remain alert(警惕的).Remember that not all adult sites can be identified by blocker,filter,or tracker software.That's why it's important to talk to your kids about what to do when something inappropriate or scary comes up.Nothing can replace involvement and supervision(监督)by adults.Keep monitoring how your kids use the Internet on a regular basis without getting into the role of the Internet traffic police.

D.Kids are turning to the Internet for everything.

  • Some people say that city living in the 21st century is stressful and offers no advantages, but I don't agree with them completely.
With the development of hightech and the improvement of living qualities,more and more people crowded into city, which leads to the uncontrollable urbanization(城市化).Because of this, some of the largest cities must be fairly oppressive(压抑的)places in which to live if you are short of money or unemployed.However, for those with much income, a city provides colorful environment which enables people to enjoy their modern life.In that case, I believe the advantages of urban living far outweigh from its shortcomings.
Regarding shopping, as for me, rather than click on the Internet to get what I want,I prefer to windowshop.All kinds of shopping malls and supermarkets located in city centre really content me.What's more,a large city's service even covers numbers of the surrounding towns and benefits many people.
In terms of entertainment, city residents are usually spoiled for choice,from amusement park to sport stadium, whoever you are will find exactly you need.Maybe going to concert tonight and visiting museums tomorrow.City always contains various activities and full of energy.
City also provides better opportunities with so many choices and challenges.Cities with universities offer highstandard education so that graduates from these places always get ideal job with considerable salary.    Every day in the business district, you can see a fierce competition among those large companies, while there are exactly places that may give birth to talents.
Many people may complain about the traffic jam or pollution in the city, but I think with some useful measures to take, our city will be more habitable rather than stressful.

(1)What does the author intend to tell us in the passage?

A.City living in the 21st century is stressful.
B.City provides more conveniences and pleasures.

    D.strong measures and fresh air
(3)City residents are usually spoiled for choice

D.because they will spend more money in a way

  • We are what we eat.That is an old expression,but one worth knowing.A recent look at diets around the world shows that people who eat healthy food-and not too much of it-live longer.But which areas of the world have the best diets? Researchers found that foods in some of the healthiest diets- Mediterranean diet,New Nordic diet,Japanese diet and French diet-may be very different,but they are all heavy on local and seasonal foods,which include more vegetables and seafood and less red meat.
Mediterranean diet contains lots of fruits,vegetables,whole grains,nuts and olive oil.The diet has proper amounts of fish and poultry(家禽肉).Red meat and foods high in sugar and salt are not big parts of this diet.
New Nordic diet has whole grains like oats and rye,vegetables such as carrots,broccoli and eggs,seafood,fruits,oil,low-fat milk and cheese.Sugary desserts are not common in this diet.
Japanese people are some of the longest living people on the planet,with women up to 87 years old and men up to 80.The Japanese diet is the reason for such lengths of life.The diet has many foods that are low in calories and high in nutrients.Japanese people eat a lot of seaweed,tofu,flee,vegetables and fish.The tradition there is to stop eating when your stomach feels 80 percent full.
However,French people eat fatty foods but do not get fat.And they live a long time.This phenomenon is called the "French Paradox".The reason why the French eat fatty foods without getting fat may be simple.They eat less.Serving sizes in French restaurants and of products sold in stores are smaller than those in most countries.And generally speaking,most French people do not snack.This means they do not eat food between meals.

(1)What do we know about the healthiest diets around the world?

    A.They contain abundant calories.
    B.They tend to be expensive.
    C.They share certain similarities.
    D.They reflect popular tastes.
(2)What is considered as a harmful eating habit in Japanese tradition?

    A.Going low in calories.
    B.Eating to the fullest.

    D.Picking many foods.

    B.By exploring reasons.
    C.By listing examples.
    D.By analyzing figures.

  • I am a full-time student at College of the Redwoods.During this period it is hard to find time to do anything other than work.But after much thought I decided to spend my extra time volunteering at the Sequoia Humane Society.
After my first day of volunteering,I had a mixture of feelings:I felt guilty because I didn't do anything to help others in the past 25 years;I felt happy because I was helping animals,and I felt sad because these animals did not have a home with a family.
The main reason for people volunteering at animal shelters(收容所)is that it helps the animals.It also helps the workers,because they have so many things to do-such as feeding and cleaning-and they just don't have enough time to give each animal proper attention and exercise.Volunteers help out by taking dogs on long walks so dogs can get exercised.
Walking and playing with the animals helps them become better suited for adoption, increasing the chance that they will find a home and live happily with their owners.
As a person who has had pets all my life,I know the joy and happiness that a pet brings to a person,a family,and the world in general.Even on the most stressful day,I know when I get home my dog will be sitting there ready to play with me and take my mind off from whatever is causing the stress I am experiencing.Volunteering at an animal shelter gives someone the opportunity to experience what I have all the time-a warm,loving animal that just wants to have fun and make you happy.So make the time to make an animal happy.Start volunteering today!

  • After finishing my teaching for a school year,I thought that I should go back to Montreal,Quebec,my hometown for a visit.My main goal was to relax in preparation for the challenges of my retirement in the coming year.
Through my stay in Montreal,I met lots of Chinese who are struggling to succeed and then lead a better life in Canada.
Some travelled thousands of miles to get knowledge.When I spoke with some of them about the major barrier they had to face after they arrived in Canada,they all talked about the two official languages of Canada.But I was impressed by their ability to express their ideas while switching between English and French.
Almost all of those people said they often felt homesick.They miss their families and friends.Though Montreal has lots of Chinese restaurants,they long for a home-cooked meal.
I met some tourists who were trying to realize their childhood dreams of experiencing the life in a developed country.When I asked them if Montreal had lived up to their expectations,they hesitated.They said that reality never agrees with fantasies.However,they were glad to have the opportunity to visit Montreal and didn't regret taking the trip.
Not all the Chinese people I met were happy.I once met a young lady who met with a gentleman through the Internet.However,to her disappointment,he disappeared after he promised to marry her in Montreal.
I was served by another Chinese person who could not handle the challenges of studying in an English environment and ended up working in a restaurant with minimum pay.
Exploring different parts of the world,without any doubt,is an enriching experience.However,one should be realistic when it comes to leaving his hometown to set up a new life in a foreign country.One should take the time to examine the advantages and the shortcomings of the venture before they decide to chase an uncertain dream of achieving success or leading a better life.

  • I live in New York City, and my neighbors are people I don't know. My city,neighborhood and block are filled with people who don't know me,don't care to know me and don't talk to me. I find that it is pretty hard to love people you don't even know. And sometimes, we all, myself included,use that as an excuse not to try. I read Brendan's story recently and was moved.
One day, Brendan,a young man in New York,was on the way back to his Brooklyn apartment when a homeless woman called Jackie asked him for money. He said that he had no money. By the end of the week,she asked two more times,and each time he answered "No". The woman looked sad, so Brendan said, "I am on my way to a job interview. If I get the job, I will take you out for Chinese food. "
Brendan got the job. He took Jackie out for lunch. That was when their friendship began. They built a strong friendship by supporting each other and spending their birthdays,holidays and difficult times together,over a period of eight years. When Brendan's heater broke,Jackie made a blanket for him. Two days later when he told her that he had lost his job, she left and returned minutes later, bringing him food to eat. She continued to do that during the whole winter. Even with so little, she often gave back.
Over these years, Jackie moved from the streets and subway stations into a halfway house,and is now moving into an apartment. To celebrate it, Brendan wanted to do something special for Jackie. He went with her to Target, and helped her to pick out everything she would need for her new apartment.
May Brendan's story encourage us to find a new way to honor, serve and love the people around us.
