  • "The U.S.Food and Drug Administration(FDA)is considering to put stricter limits over tanning salons(晒黑廊)and wants to ban anyone younger than 18 years of age from using a tanning bed,"an advisory panel(专家团)announced last week.
The panel is calling for tighter controls on the industry such as requiring teenagers to get the approval from their parents before using tanning beds or limiting the use of artificial tanning to a certain age."Given the absence of any demonstrated benefits,I think it is an obligation for us to ban artificial tanning for those under 18,"said panelist Dr.Michael Olding.
Along with a possible ban for teenagers,the panel also recommended that visible warning labels should be placed either on the tanning machines or in the salons in order to caution tanners of the possible dangers.In addition,the committee decided that stricter regulations and classifications were critical to make the machines safer.At this time the machines are categorized as FDA Class 1devices,the ones that are least likely to cause harm.In case the FDA decided to change their classification from Class 1 to Class 2,as advised by the panel,the FDA could limit the levels of radiation the machines emit.Class 2 devices include Xray machines and powered wheelchairs.
Getting a tan,whether from a tanning bed or the sun,increases the risk of developing skin cancer.Last year,the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)declared tanning beds as "carcinogenic(致癌的)to humans".It was discovered that young individuals in their teens and 20s who use tanning beds on a regular basis have a 75 percent higher risk of suffering from melanoma(黑素瘤),the deadliest form of skin cancer.According to the American Cancer Society,melanoma accounted for nearly 69,000 cases of skin cancer in 2009 and will account for most (about 8,650)of the 11,590 mortality cases due to skin cancer each year.

(1)According to the passage,what measures will U.S.FDA most probably take?

    A.Banning tanning salons.
B.Posing heavier tax over tanning salons.
C.Having tighter controls over tanning salons.
D.Limiting the number of tanning salons in every state.
(2)Which of the following suggestions for making tanning salons safer is NOT mentioned?

    A.Visible caution.
    B.Setting age limit.
    C.Professional personnel.
    D.Parental approval for teenagers.
(3)What does the writer want to express in the last paragraph?

A.Tanning in one's youth may mean death.
B.Tanning in the sun is safer than on the tanning bed.
C.People should get tanned without getting melanoma.
D.Getting tanned is only a good idea for those above thirty years old.
(4)What will most probably happen,if the advisory panel's suggestions are adopted and put into practice?

A.Fewer people will suffer from skin cancer.
B.Tanning salons will have more customers.
C.Getting a tan in a tanning salon will cost less.

  • My elder brother Steve, in the absence of my father who died when I was six, gave me important lessons in values that helped me grow into an adult.
For instance, Steve taught me to face the results of my behavior. Once when I returned in tears from a Saturday baseball game, it was Steve who took the time to ask me what happened. When I explained that my baseball had soared through Mrs. Holt's basement window, breaking the glass with a crash, Steve encouraged me to confess to her. After all, I should have been playing in the park down Fifth Street and not in the path between buildings. Although my knees knocked as I explained to Mrs. Holt, I offered to pay for the window from my pocket money if she would return my ball.
I also learned from Steve that personal property is a sacred thing. After I found a shiny silver pen in my fifth-grade classroom, I wanted to keep it, but Steve explained that it might be important to someone else in spite of the fact that it had little value. He reminded me of how much I'd hate to lose to someone else the small dog my father carved from a piece of cheap wood. I returned the pen to my teacher, Mrs. Davids, and still remembered the smell of her perfume as she patted me on the shoulder.
Yet of all the instructions Steve gave me, his respect for life is the most vivid in my mind. When I was twelve, I killed an old brown sparrow in the yard with a BB gun. Excited with my accuracy, I screamed to Steve to come from the house to take a look. I shall never forget the way he stood for a long moment and stared at the bird on the ground. Then in a dead, quiet voice, he asked, "Did it hurt you first, Mark? " I didn't know what toanswer. He continued with his eyes firm, "The only time you should ever think of hurting a living thing is if it hurts you first. And then you think a long, long time. " I really felt terrible then, but that moment stands out as the most important lesson my brother taught me.

(1)What is the main subject of the passage?

    A. The relationship between Mark and Steve.
    B. The important lesson Mark learned in school.
    C. Steve's important role in Mark's growing process.
    D. Mark and Steve's respect for living things.
(2)In the story about the pen, which of the following lessons did Steve teach his brother?

    A. Respect for personal property.
    B. Respect for life.
    C. Sympathy for people with problems.
    D. The value of honesty.
(3)According to the writer, which was the most important lesson Steve taught his young brother?

  • Astronauts aboard the space station celebrated a space first on Wednesday by drinking water that had been recycled from their urine(尿), sweat and water got from air. They said "cheers", clicked drinking bags and toasted NASA workers on the ground.
The urine recycling system is needed for astronaut stations on the moon and Mars. It also will have NASA money because it won't have to ship up as much water to the station by space shuttles or cargo rockets. Besides, it's important as the space station is about to expand from three people living on board to six.
The recycling system had been brought up to the space station last November by space shuttle Endeavour, but it couldn't be used until samples(样品) were tested back on earth. So when it came time to actually drink up, NASA made a big deal of it. The three-man crew stood holding their drinks and congratulated engineers in two NASA centres that worked on the system.
"This is something that had been the stuff of science fiction, " American astronaut Michael Barratt said before taking a small mouthful. "The taste is worth trying. "
The new system takes the combined urine of the crew from the toilet, moves it to a big tank, where the water is boiled off, and the vapor(水蒸气) is collected. The rest of the urine is thrown away. Then the water vapor is mixed with water from air, and then it goes through filters (过滤器). When six crew members are aboard it can make about six gallons from urine in about six hours.
"Some people may find the idea of drinking recycled urine distasteful, but it is also done on earth, but with a lot longer time between urine and the tap, " said Marybeth Edeen, the space station's national lab manager.
The technology NASA developed for this system has already been used for quick water purification after the 2004 Asian tsunami.

(1)According to the text, the recycling system is important because

    A. it makes traveling to the moon for the average person possible
    B. with it NASA won't need to ship any water up to the space station
    C. it can help meet the need for more water after the crew is expanded
    D. it protects the environment in space by reducing the amount of waste
(2)From Para. 5 we can know

    A. the theory behind the recycling system
    B. the effect of the recycling system
    C. the process of recycling urine
    D. an opinion on recycling urine
(3)What did Edeen say about recycled urine and the recycling system?

    A. The taste of recycled urine is not as good as that of common water.
    B. The recycling system has made a science fiction story come true.
    C. The idea of drinking recycled urine makes astronauts feel unpleasant.
    D. It takes a longer time on earth to make water from urine than in space.
(4)What is the best title for the passage?

  • While researchers have long shown that tall people earn more than their shorter counterparts, it's not only social discrimination that accounts for this inequality -- tall people are just smarter than their height-challenged peers, a new study finds.
"As early as age three -- before schooling has had a chance to play a role -- and throughout childhood, taller children perform significantly better on cognitive tests," wrote Anne Case and Christina Paxson of Princeton University in a paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research.
The findings were based primarily on two British studies that followed children born in 1958 and 1970, respectively, through adulthood and a U.S. study on height and occupational choice.
Other studies have pointed to low self-esteem, better health that accompanies greater height, and social discrimination as culprits(罪犯) for lower pay for shorter people.
But researchers Case and Paxson believe the height advantage in the job world is more than just a question of image.
"As adults, taller individuals are more likely to select into higher paying occupations that require more advanced verbal and numerical skills and greater intelligence, for which they earn handsome returns," they wrote.
For both men and women in the United States and the United Kingdom, a height advantage of four inches equated with a 10 percent increase in wages on average.
But the researchers said the differences in performance crop up long before the tall people enter the job force. Prenatal care(产前护理) and the time between birth and the age of 3 are critical periods for determining future cognitive ability and height.
"Prenatal care and prenatal nutrition are just incredibly important, even more so than we already knew," Case said in an interview.
Since the study's data only included populations in the United Kingdom and the United States, the findings could not be applied to other regions, Case said.
And how tall are the researchers?
They are both about 5 feet 8 inches tall, well above the average height of 5 feet 4 inches for American women.

(1)What can be learnt from the study of Anne Case and Christina Paxson is that

    A. the reason for lower pay for shorter people is social discrimination
    B. taller children perform significantly better on cognitive test
    C. tall people earn more than shorter counterparts
    D. prenatal care and prenatal nutrition are less important than we already knew
(2)Which period is the most important for determining future cognitive ability and height?

    A. between age 3 and schooling

    C. the whole childhood
    D. between 1958 and 1970

It was a hot afternoon and we decided to have an adventure in Stephanie's basement. As I opened the basement door, before us lay the biggest room, full of amazing things like guns, dolls, and old clothes. I ran downstairs, and spotted red steel can. It was paint. I looked beyond it and there lay even more paint in bright colors like purple, orange, blue and green.
"Stephanie, I just found us a project for the day. Get some paintbrushes. We are fixing to paint." She screamed with excitement as I told her of my secret plans and immediately we got to work. We gathered all the brushes we could find and moved all of our materials to my yard. There on the road in front of my house, we painted bit stripes (条纹) of colors across the pavement (人行道). Stripe by stripe, our colors turned into a beautiful rainbow. It was fantastic!
The sun was starting to sink. I saw a car in the distance and jumped up as I recognized the car. It was my mother. I couldn't wait to show her my masterpiece. The car pulled slowly into the driveway and from the look on my mother's face, I could tell that I was in deep trouble.
My mother shut the car door and walked towards me. Her eyes glaring, she shouted, "What in the world were you thinking? I understood when you made castles out of leaves, and climbed the neighbors' trees, but this! Come inside right now!" I stood there glaring hack at her for a minute, angry because she had insulted (侮辱) my art.
"Now go clean it up!" Mother and I began cleaning the road. Tears ran down my cheeks as I saw my beautiful rainbow turn into black cement.
Though years have now passed, I still wonder where my rainbow has gone. I wonder if, maybe when I get older, I can find my rainbow and never have to brush it away. I guess we all need sort of rainbow to brighten our lives from time to time and to keep our hopes and dreams colorful.

  • That day, my parents were leaving for our hometown and I went to see them off. In fact, my father had never traveled by air before, so I just took this opportunity to make his experience wonderful. In spite of being asked to book train tickets, I got them air tickets.
The moment I handed over the tickets to him, he was surprised to see that I had booked them air tickets. The excitement was very obvious on his face, waiting for the time of travel. We went to the airport together, checked the baggage, asked for a window seat and then waited restlessly for the security check-in. He was thoroughly enjoying himself and I, too, was filled with joy watching him experience all these things.
As they were about to go in for the security check-in, he walked up to me with tears in his eyes and thanked me. He became very emotional and it was not as if I had done something great, but the fact that this meant a great deal to him.
I felt surprised at his behavior. But later, thinking about the entire matter, I looked back on my life.
How many dreams did our parents have? Did they come true? Without understanding the financial situation, we, as children, asked for cricket bats, dresses, toys, outings, etc. Did we ever think about the sacrfices they had to make to realize our wishes? Did we ever say thanks for all that they have done for us?
Instead of my dad saying thank you to me, I would want to say I'm sorry for making him wait so long for this small dream. I do realize how much he has sacrificed for my sake and I will do my best to give the best possible attention to all their wishes. Being old does not mean that they have to give up everything. They have wishes, too.

(1)Which is the best title of the passage?

    A. Two air tickets
    B.How to love parents
    C. Parents have dreams, too
    D. A considerate son
(2)How did the parents feel while waiting for the travel?

    A. cheerful
    B. restless
    C. depressed
    D. puzzled
(3)Which of the following is NOT true?

    A. It was a delight for the parents to travel by air.
    B. The father was moved to tears because of what his son had done for him.
    C. The parents did everything they could to bring up their son.
    D. The author is always aware of his parents' sacrifice for him
(4)What's the main reason why parents give up their dreams?

    A. Because of their lack of money
    B. Because of their busy work
    C. Because of their love for their son
    D. Because of being old with age

  • Wild animals seem to have escaped the Indian Ocean tsunami (海啸), adding weight to ideas they possess a "sixth sense" for disasters, experts said on Thursday. Sri Lanka wildlife officials have said the giant waves that killed over 24,000 people along the Indian Ocean Island's coast seemingly missed wild beasts, with no dead animals found.
"No elephants are dead, not even a dead hare or rabbit. I think animals can sense disaster. They have a sixth sense. They know when things are happening," H. D. Ratnayake, deputy director of Sri Lanka's Wildlife Department said on Wednesday.
The waves washed floodwaters up to 3km (2miles) inland at Yala National Park in the southeast, Sri Lanka's biggest wildlife reserve (自然保护区) and home to hundreds of wild elephants. "There has been a lot of evidence about dogs barking or birds migrating before volcanic eruptions or earthquakes. But it has not been proved," said Matthew van Lierop, an animal behaviour specialist at Johannesburg Zoo. "There have been no specific studies because you can't really test it in a lab or field setting," he said.
Other authorities agreed with this conclusion. "Wildlife seems to be able to pick up certain phenomenon, especially birds. There are many reports of birds detecting coming disasters," said Clive Walker, who has written several books on African wildlife.
Animals certainly rely on the known senses such as smell or hearing to avoid danger such as predators(食肉动物). The idea of an animal "sixth sense" is a lasting one that the evidence on Sri Lanka's damaged coast is likely to add to.

    C. why animals can save themselves from natural disasters
    D. the damage that was caused in the Indian Ocean tsunami
(2)Which of the following is TURE according to the passage?

    A. It has been proved that animals have a sixth sense.
    B. It's generally considered that animals can sense the coming of disasters.
    C. Research has been made on the special movements of animals before disasters.
    D. It can be tested that animals have the known sense to escape from the disasters.
(3)What does the term "sixth sense" in the passage mean?

    A. The animal's imagination in the brain.
    B. A sense that is the same as smell or hearing.
    C. Some hidden power to say something will happen in advance.
    D. The natural ability of animals that can't save them from danger.
(4)Which section does the passage most probably appear in a newspaper?
