  • The ongoing rise in housing prices in 70largeandmediumsized Chinese cities indicates we are yet to find effective policies for reining in runaway housing prices.
Prices rose by an average of 5.3percent yearonyear in April,according to the National Development and Reform Commission.
Although this rate may not seem overly high,it is part of a strong and continued rises in housing prices over the past months.What is alarming is that in some big cities,such as Beijing,Shenzhen and Nanjing,the monthly growth was as high as 10percent.
Beijing,with a yearonyear growth rate of 10.7percent,has been leading the nation since last June with price increases hovering around 10percent.
The government, prompted by the worried public, has taken a series of measures since the market started warming up four or five years ago.
Admittedly, there are sound reasons for the continued strong price rise.
The soaring demand is a result of the country's scrapping its traditional national housing program,which has driven people to the commerical market,and growing unbanization,which has seen millions of people move to cities.And with a booming economy and few investment options,housing continues to attract investment.
There are obvious signs of speculation in the market.
A large number of investors are believed to be hoarding housing to profit from future price increases.They have distorted market supply and demand to push up prices.
The failure to devise proper policies to control speculation is one of the crucial factors behind the everrising prices.
The government,in the long run,can stabilize the property market through balancing regional development.It can divert demand to other cities around regional centers.
In the short term, the speculative bubbles must be deflated so that supply and demand can reflect reality.
The Shanghai authorities reportedly decided over the weekend to levy a 20percent tax on the sale of previouslyowned homes.Although the local tax authorities did not verify the news,it triggered an earthquake in the local market.People are rushing to sell their houses before tax measures are put in place.
Policy makers need to closely monitor the market reaction and study the pros and cons of a tax on the sale of previouslyowned housing as a way to stabilize the redhot market.

35.As for the yearonyear growth rate of housing prices,which city takes the lead?

    A.Shanghai.
    B.Beijing.
    C.Shenzhen.
    D.Nanjing.
36.The underlined word in the passage can be replaced by

    A.caused
    B.struck
    C.invented
    D.discovered
37.Which of the following is not the reason for housing prices rising?

    A.Removing traditional national housing program.
    B.Increasing urbanization.
    C.Speculation.
    D.Having lots of investment options.
38.According to the passage,which of the following is true?

A.The runaway housing prices have been controlled.
B.The housing market began warming up a year ago.
C.All people are satisfied with the government's decision of a tax on the sale of previouslyowned housing.

  • TUVALU,a tiny country in the Pacific Ocean, has asked for help as it fears it will be swallowed up by the sea.
Storms and huge waves are a constant threat and none of Tuvalu's nine little islands is more than five meters above sea level,Salt water is already entering the country's drinking water supply,as well as damaging plants that produce fruit and vegetable.(35)

    (36)

.Venice,a historic city in Italy best known for its canals, has sunk about 24 cm over the past 100 years.Experts say that it will have sunk another 20-50  cm by 2050.A century ago,St.Mark's Square, the lowest point in the city, flooded about nine times a year,Nowadays,it happens more than 100 times. While Venice is slowly sinking into the mud on which it stands,Tuvalu's rising sea level is caused by global warming.
The average global temperature has increased by almost 0.5 centigrade degrees over the past century; scientists expect it to rise by extra 1-3 degrees over the next 100 years.
Warmer weather makes glaciers(冰川)melt, adding more water to the ocean. The warmer temperatures also make water expand,so it takes up more space, causing the sea level to rise. The sea level has risen about 10-25 cm in the last 100 years.
    (37)

.Through burning coal, oil and gas, people have been increasing the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as CO2.This adds to the power of the greenhouse effect, making the planet even warmer.
Many scientists believe that,if the warming is not stopped, there will be huge climate changes.(38)

    (39)

,the sea will swallow up millions of homes and the world will be flooded with"climate refugees"looking for somewhere to live.

A.The main cause of global warming is human pollution
    B.Should this come true
    C.Without urgent help,the country's days are numbered
D.But Tuvalu is not the first place to face sinking into the sea
E.The sea level could rise by one meter this century
F.people face a lot of pollution
G.much has been done about our planet.

So the king said,"All right, you may work on one of the walls in the new hall."
Just then,another artist said,"Please allow me to work on the opposite wall.I shall make exactly what that man will make on the opposite wall.Moreover,I shall do so without looking at his work.I would even request you to have a thick curtain put up between the two walls so that either of us cannot see the other."

  • EVERYBODY in this world is different from one another. But do you know that understanding differences can help you better manage your money?
As we grow up,we gradually develop a set of our own values or beliefs.These are influenced by society,our family,the education we receive and so on.Once this value system is set up,it's not easy to change later in life.
Financial experts say that everyone also has their own belief of how to manage their finances.This is part of our value system and it has a great impact on the way we look after our money.
According to our different values,experts put us in three categories.They are:the ant,the cricket and the snail.

    ◆The cricket-fun first
The cricket wants to enjoy everything now and doesn't think too much about the future.They even borrow money when they really want something.Many young people now belong to this group.These people have little savings.When they get old,they might have problems.They should learn to save and buy insurance.
    ◆The snail-lives under pressure
The snail refers to people who make life difficult for themselves.They take big longterm loans from the bank in order to buy things such as luxury houses.They are happy to take big loans even though they are not sure whether they can afford it.This can cause problems in the future.They should plan more carefully.

35.People with the character of the snail would like to

  • To build a safer car,Japanese automakers are trying to replace the driver.
Inspired by statistics blaming human error for most accidents,Toyota and its competitors are designing"intelligent"cars that can almost drive themselves on the highway.
The systems are designed to reduce human tiredness and the mistakes that often result. This kind of support is what drivers need most in a country with some of the most crowded roads in the world. That is why it should not be surprising that Japan is leading the race to make cars smarter.
To provide a safer ride,Japanese automakers are turning to technologies like laser radar and machine vision to replace tired eyes and wandering minds.
An infrared(红外线的) radar unit fixed on the bumper is part of a new cruise(巡航) control method that Toyota introduced in August 1997.It's now an optional(随意的) feature on its Celsior luxury car that costs 70,000 yuan($648).
The"adaptive"system tracks(尾随) the car ahead, and slows down or speeds up the car automatically to keep a safer distance in highway traffic. The same technology has also been used by some cars made by Toyota's competitors.
Subaru,a type of its Legacy wagon, made its first appearance last September with Active Driving Assist(ADA),which besides adjusting cruising speed, sounds an alarm if the car goes out of its lane(车道) or makes a turn too fast.In the latter case,it down shifts gear even before the driver starts to brake.
An even smarter system is coming from Honda.Called Honda Intelligent Driver Support(HIDS),it"sees"the road through a tiny camera on the windshield and helps steer(操纵) the car down the middle of lane.
A computer picks out line on the highway surface and touched the car's steering wheel in the right direction.
Honda got approval in March to start testing HIDS on the highway and says it will arrive in showrooms in the near future.

31.Why are Japanese automakers developing cars that can almost drive themselves  on the highway?

A.Because they want to win the car competition.
B.Because many accidents resulted from the mistakes made by drivers.
C.Because drivers are always tired when driving the car.
D.Because people don't want to drive the cars themselves.
32.What is the main purpose for the automakers to design the system of the new  cars?

A.To make them run faster so that they can sell them at higher prices.
B.To make them keep to the lane without being controlled.
C.To help drivers make fewer mistakes so that accidents can be avoided.
D.To use some advanced devices like laser radar and machine vision.
33.We can infer from the passage that

A.accidents always occur in the crowded streets
B.traffic accidents are likely to happen when drivers are tired and careless
C.accidents happen because traffic rules are not obeyed
D.many accidents occur because there are no advanced systems
34.If you drive the car with HIDS,you will find

A.your car is always keeping the right direction
B.your car is slowed down or speeded up automatically
C.your car is controlled by an infrared radar
D.you are always keeping a safer distance on the highway.
